FAQ

First Massage ... What to Expect
Brief Interview: Often a first massage is a Swedish massage (relaxing), but sometimes it is pain that brings you to your first session. If this is the case, you may opt for a massage that focuses on loosening up those sore tight muscles. Before we begin, I like to get a bit of a health history to see if there are any problems that are making you uncomfortable and what you hope to get out of the session.
Do I need to be completely undressed? This is entirely a matter of one’s preference and personal comfort. For those who wish to have their underwear on, that is fine. For those comfortable with being completely undressed, you are covered by a sheet except for the area being worked on. Your private areas are always covered and never touched. Your comfort level and respecting your privacy are very important considerations. If you are new to massage and being undressed is not comfortable for you, I can work over your clothes.
Talking and Music: Some people like to have soft music while others find that they get more deeply relaxed with complete quiet. Still other clients like to chat while they have massage and while this is OK, I encourage you to consider using this time as an opportunity to “get out of your head” and relax deeply. I follow your lead in whether to talk or not, but in order to receive your perfect massage, I encourage feedback on technique pressure and your comfort.
Length of Session: I offer fully clothed chair massage at the market and in studio. One hour is the shortest that I would recommend (except for older, frail or ill clients). 90 Minutes is better because you have time to give extra attention to tight areas and not miss out on the full body session.
How frequently should I get massage? As often as you are able. At one end of the spectrum, I have had clients who come in only when they are in a lot of pain, some who come once a month, every one or two weeks, and as often as every other day when rehabilitating from an injury/surgery or during an intense fitness training . As you get more massage, you will notice that your body becomes more responsive by loosening more deeply and more quickly. As for myself, I like to get a massage once a week and I can see what a dramatic difference it makes to one’s overall well being. Do give massage a try and see how wonderful it can make you feel.
Restrictions/Contraindications: If you are sick with a fever, cold or flu, please wait until it has cleared up so as not to make myself or other clients ill. Should you have any serious health issues, do speak with your doctor about your plan to get massage. If you have any concerns, I would be happy to discuss what types of massage would be most helpful for you.
